Sussex Ringers Live on BBC Radio

‘If you want to learn the art of bellringing listen out!’ On Sunday 8th July, Sussex Ringers Rob Lane (Master), Marisa Hayes and Julie McDonnell featured live on BBC Radio Sussex and Surrey’s ‘Sunday Breakfast with Emily Jeffery’. They discussed the international Ringing Remembers recruitment campaign and the Young Ringers’ National Contest (which Sussex won!). They encouraged people to have a go at learning this ancient art – a team activity that’s open to all, where you’re welcome at towers all over the country and in other parts of the world. And yes, we’ll be ringing to celebrate a football world cup win!

Here is a link to the programme, (available until 6th August) https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p06bm2nk - go to 1h22 for Julie and 2h21 for Rob and Marisa.

Emily Jeffrey appealed for anyone learning for Ringing Remembers in Sussex and Surrey to email her at This email address is being protected from spambots. The Central Council also featured this as their top news story at the weekend!

Sussex Young Ringers win National Striking Competition

Congratulations to the Sussex Young Ringers team who won the RWNYC (Ringing World National Youth Contest) in London today (7th July 2018).

There were 8 teams in their heat at Cubitt Town, with the top two performances going through to the final at Garlickhythe. A superb performance secured their place. The six teams in the final were all of an impressively high standard but after a confident, excellent, almost faultless piece of ringing Sussex were judged the winners. Julia Cater, Chief Judge, said of the Sussex win - 'you did an amazing job. Professional and controlled. Fully deserved'.

Whitechapel TrophyThe Sussex Young Ringers received the Gold Medal for the Call Changes category and were of the Whitechapel Trophy for the overall contest, with an A grade for their ringing.

Well done to the whole team, we are so proud of you!

On behalf of the Association, many thanks to Sandra Alford & Anne Franklin for all their hard work in supporting the Young Ringers' training, practice & preparation for this event.

Dewby's bells - a hit at the South of England Show!

Bells played a central part at the South of England Show this year. Alison Everett, our Communication & Events team leader (pictured, centre) and Marisa Hayes led the organisation of the SCACR presence at the show.

The Dewbys mini-ring was constantly in use throughout the three days of the show, enjoyed by all ages. Hundreds of people visited the Sanctuary space as well as many schools, including St Margaret's, Rottingdean, taking part in toasting marshmallows on the log fire.
